Liebster Award

liebsteraward

My blog has been nominated for the Liebster award by Ginger of The Bee Writes which was a very thoughtful and kind thing to do.  I have not ever participated in the award process, but this seems a little different than some of the awards I have seen.

Apparently, this award started by bloggers for bloggers and is really just a way to get people to visit blogs they may not have known about.  It is also a get to know you type deal as well.  I have decided I will participate this time.

If you have been nominated for The Liebster Award AND YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT, write a blog post about the Liebster award in which the Rules are simple as follows:

Acknowledge the blog who nominated you.

Answer the 11 questions your nominator asked.

Nominate 11 other bloggers.

Ask them 11 questions.

Let them know you have nominated them.

11 questions from The Bee Writes.

1.  Where were you born?  I was born in Trenton, New Jersey.  I spent most of my childhood moving back and forth across the Delaware River to Pennsylvania.

2.  What has been your favorite pet and why?  You know I can’t choose just one.  My first dog was my dad’s before he and my mother got married.  His name was Shep.  he taught me and half the kids in the neighborhood to walk.  He would let us hang onto him and walk slowly.  Then there was Sox.  He was my cat.  He lived to be an old man of 17.  I can’t forget Bandit.  He was a Toy Fox Terrier who lived to the age of 14.  I adopted him from the SPCA in Pennsylvania.  I missed him terribly, but we had decided not to get another dog.  But, after my husband passed away I decided I wanted to get a dog.  I adopted Gracie from the Animal Shelter up the road.  She is the sweetest girl.

3.  Do you work?  If so where?  I am retired now, but I was an RN working in critical care in the Philadelphia area.

4.  If you could go exploring anywhere, where would that be?  If I could go exploring it would be to Rome, Italy.  I have always wanted to go there.  I could spend hours upon hours exploring the architecture with my camera.

5.  Your biggest regret?  I don’t really have any.  Whatever I did I did with the best knowledge at the time and always for the right reasons.

6.  How many siblings do you have?  What are your thoughts on that number?  I had one brother and he passed away three years ago.  I was lonely with only a younger brother.  I wanted a big family when I married.  I had four children.

7.  What decade do you really belong in?  This is a funny question to me.  I don’t think there is a decade I belong in this century or last century.

8.  Would you rather live in the Arctic or Antarctic Circle?  Neither, I like the Caribbean.  🙂

9.  What is your favorite artistic medium?  I am a quilter, I do needlework, cross stitch, embroidery, crewel, and love photography.

10.  Camping or hotels?  Hotels!  I am not a camper.  Give me hot and cold running water, a soft bed, color TV, and room service.

11.  Favorite school subject?  I was into science in school.

I am the oldest in my family.  I only had one brother and I lost him a couple of years ago.  I longed to have a big family.

I am looking forward to doing some photography this spring.  I haven’t done much of that since last summer.

The first sign of spring for me was a dandelion blooming in my driveway.  Even though it is just a weed, it’s bright yellow warmed my heart that the end of winter was close.

Lucky Charms

Daily Prompt:  Talisman

Have you ever had a lucky charm?  I can remember when I was a child I had a rabbit’s foot.  Remember them?  It was supposed to bring me good luck.  But, it never did.  It was just a superstition.  I grew out of believing in things bringing luck to me.

Many non-catholic’s believe that the medals we wear or the rosaries we use or the statues of saints we have are nothing more than a talisman.  That couldn’t be further from the truth.  These things are a sign of our devotion to a particular saint or to Jesus.

I wear a Miraculous Medal always.  I have since I graduated from eighth grade.  I was installed into the sodality at my parish with it.  This medal is one of the Blessed Mother.  I don’t really have a patron saint, so I adopted her as mine.  Anyway, this is an outward sign of my devotion to the Mother of Jesus.

This devotion does not take anything away from my adoration of Jesus or God.  It is simply that I call on her for help when I have a problem.  No one has more influence on God then Mary.  God chose her to be His Son’s mother.  No one has more influence on Jesus, she raised and cared for Him during his life.  So, although I pray to God for my concern, I also ask Mary to intercede for me.  It is no different than asking a friend to pray for you.

Saints have already arrived in heaven.  They enjoy the glorious vision of God.  They have His ear so to speak.  So, when we are storming heaven with prayer, they join in and pray for us too.  It’s a beautiful part of my Catholic faith.

Midnight Hamster Hunt In The Nude

nf-badge-1linerweds-2017 - Copy

Written for Linda G. Hills’ One Liner Wednesday:  The F-Word and the

 Daily Prompt:  Invisible

Many years ago I had a pool party for some of my fellow workers.  As the night went on, one of the girls asked if she could go look at the hamsters my kids had.   I told her sure, and that if she wanted one she was welcome to it.  The two hamsters that were supposed to be the same sex, produced eleven or twelve little fur balls.

These little rodents were housed in one of those plastic tunnel habitats and because of our cat, we had it sitting on the bar in our family room instead of my daughter’s room.

All of a sudden Jill comes out and tells me that there are no hamsters in the habitat.  I laughed and told her that that was impossible.  They must all be burrowed down under the nesting material.  She shook her head no, that there were no hamsters in it.

I ran into the family room and sure enough, there was not one of those fur balls in the habitat.  The little buggers chewed right through the plastic!  I looked around quickly but didn’t see anything running around.  I couldn’t believe it.  They weren’t invisible for heaven’s sake.  By now the party was over and everyone was leaving.

After the last person left, I ran out to the pool house and took off my bathing suit and wrapped myself up in a towel.  As I walked back into the house, I saw a little furry thing scurry up my drapes.  I ran for it and caught it.  One down.

I called for hubby to come help me find the critters.  So I don’t know how much time had gone by, but I was on my hands and knees in front of my door scooping up a hamster when I hear a knock on the door. Of course, in my mad hamster hunting, I had neglected to close the inside door.  I look around and see this guy standing there with his mouth open.  I looked down and realized that my towel had come loose.  I almost died.  And so did he.  I got up and ran down the hall calling hubby to handle whatever he needed.

I have laughed over this for years.  🙂

The Rumor

Daily Prompt:  Identical, Blush

TwoWordTuesday

This week’s two words are Canard and/or Rumor.

It was late when her shift at the hospital ended.  She was tired and she couldn’t stop thinking about the rumors she had heard at work.  I can’t believe they are going to lay off nurses, she thought.  We are short staffed as it is.

She was lost in thought and not paying attention to her surroundings while she walked to her car in the dark parking lot.  They still hadn’t fixed the lights that had burned out weeks ago.  As Peggy started to put the key in the door to unlock the car, something hit her on the head.  She felt herself falling down, but it was in slow motion.  Suddenly as she was losing consciousness, she felt hands around her waist.  Peggy heard garbled voices.

It seemed like she had been asleep for days when she finally opened her eyes in the emergency room.  Not sure why she was there, she tried to get up but fell backward on the liter.  Her head really hurt and she felt a huge bandage on her head.  She could not figure out what had happened to her.

She fell asleep again, then woke shortly after hearing voices near her.  Opening her eyes she saw that her identical twins were standing next to the bed.  Wait, how did I get into a bed and room without me knowing it.?  What is going on?  Her kids were happy to see she was awake finally.  They gave her a big hug and started asking questions about her injury.  All Peggy could remember was something hitting her head and someone grabbing her.

Then her nurse came into the room.  She explained that one of the overhead lights in the parking lot had exploded and the metal bracket fell on your head.  It was very lucky that the security guard was there and saw it happen.  You could have been out there until day shift started.

Peggy appreciated the fact that the security guard got her attention right away, but she was furious that the hospital had been neglectful in not repairing the lights.  She was steaming.

After Peggy’s kids left, the security guard that had helped her walked into the room.  He told Peggy that he was happy to see she was awake.  He had been worried about her all night.  Apparently, she had said some strange things to him when he was trying to keep her from falling.   Peggy, blushed as she thanked the kind man for what he had done for her.  He told her no worries that he knew she didn’t realize he was trying to help her.

In the evening, the nursing supervisor came in to check on Peggy.  She told her that she had given everyone quite a scare.  Peggy looked at her square in the eye and asked her if the hospital was laying off nurses.  Her supervisor laughed and said that canard has been going around the hospital for months.  Peggy just stared at her and asked if it was true.  The supervisor just smiled and said you just get better and don’t worry about anything.  Then she was gone.

Share Your World

Cee’s Share Your World March 19, 2018

Here are the questions and my answers for Cee’s Share Your World this week.

What is your earliest memory?  My earliest memory is from about three years old.  I remember my mother and I had matching swimming suits with gingerbread men on them.  Mine had a ruffle around the bottom.  I can remember sitting on the step of the kid’s pool at our local LPRA.

Which way does the toilet paper roll go? Over or under?  Ahh, this has been the subject of a lot of debate.  In my house, the toilet paper goes over.  When I got married, my husband insisted it go under.  I told him that since I was the one who replaced most often, and cleaned the bathroom, it would go over.  So, our entire marriage the roll went over.

What makes you feel grounded?  I feel grounded when I go to Mass.  If I miss for one reason or other on Sunday, I feel as though part of me is missing.  Going to church makes me feel as if I am a part of something so much bigger than my small little world.  I feel the love of the Lord deep in my soul.

What did you appreciate or what made you smile this past week? Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.  What I really appreciated this past week was having my Gracie home with me.  My dear friend was keeping her while I was away.  Last Tuesday she came home.  She hasn’t left my side since except when she needs to go out.   Here she is.  🙂

Making A Plan

Daily Prompt:  Patience, Incubate, Wrinkle

dailypromptplan.jpg

Image from Gulf News Readers Blog

How do you come up with a good plan?  Well, I think that you need to have patience, utilize the principle of incubation, and smooth out the wrinkles in your ideas.

Here’s what I mean.  To devise a good plan your thoughts cannot be rushed.  It takes time to sift through all of your options and do some research.  If these options are not considered, your plan may not be successful.

As you are considering these options, you have to ponder their value.  Hence incubation.  These ideas have to be twisted and turned in your mind so that you do not miss any important information.  They sort of simmer there for a bit.

As for the wrinkles, well these are the thoughts that cause some doubt or they present an obstacle to your plan.  With the right information, we can determine the best course of action.

Now, that is not to say that we still cannot come up with an unsuccessful plan.  But, if we make our decisions with the best information we have, and for the right reasons, our plan is not faulty.  Rather, the information available to us was incomplete.

It is important to note that our life experiences, education, cultural experiences, and geographic location affect the information that is readily available to us.  When I was a young mother, I did not have the experience to make all the right decisions about my daughter.  By the time the next one came along, ten years later, I was much better equipped to raise him.  My oldest constantly tells her brother and sister that she broke me in for them.  There is a lot of truth to that statement.

It’s Not Easy Being Green

Linda G. Hill’s prompt for #SoCS March 17, 2018:  green

socs-badge-2017-18-e1503097084778

I love where I live.  I live in a clearing in the middle of the woods.  It’s quiet back here and there is a lot of wildlife.  I often see bear tracks on my property.  I even had an alligator in a small pond once.  It wasn’t a big one, but still an alligator!  Of course, there are deer, rabbits, squirrels, red foxes, coyotes, anoles, and raptors that fly around all the time.  I have to be careful because one could easily swoop down and pick up my little Gracie.

Gracie is my little 12-pound Cairn Terrier mix.  She’s a sweetheart and so much company for me.   So when she goes out into the yard, (woods) I have to check on her often.

One of my favorite critters are the tree frogs.  I love the noise they make singing to each other.  At night they gather around my porch light by my front door to feed off the bugs.  I get the biggest kick out of seeing them on the storm door and on the wall of the house.  They just sit there getting fat.  They don’t even move when I get close.  They are always kind enough to stay still so I can take photos of them.

Last fall, there were a ton of baby frogs.  Around the light that is on the wall by my door, there is a small ledge about a half inch wide.  There were five baby frogs in a row sittingDSCF4676 on it.  Too cute.

I almost think of the frogs as pets.  I check on them each evening.  They just make me happy.  I don’t particularly like to hold them or anything, just like to look at them.

Here is a picture of the first frog that has come to the house this year.  I always get excited when I start to see the tree frogs.  It means winter is over and spring is on the way.

The color green always reminds me of Kermit the Frog and his famous song It’s Not Easy Being Green.  You remember the Muppets right?  Kermit was lamenting about blending in with so many ordinary things.  I always thought it was cute.  Maybe that’s why I love the tree frogs so much.  🙂
