Weekend Coffee Share

Ten Things of Thankful

And

Join us for some coffee time!

If we were having coffee today, I would be telling you about my crazy week.  The weather has been beautiful.  Summer has arrived!  My potted plants on my front porch have recovered from the shock of being re-potted and are blooming like crazy.  I really enjoy flowers, but hate gardening.  So plants in pots it is.

How was your week?  Want another cup of coffee?

In my quilt guild, I am participating in a round robin exchange.  A round robin is when each person in the group makes a center piece.  Usually a square of any size set by the rules of the exchange.  Then, every two months it is passed to the next person on the list.  You always pass to the same person.  Each person adds a row around the block thereby increasing the size of the quilt top.  So, on Sunday I realized that I had had this round for two months and had not done it yet.  Tuesday was guild day.  I began to panic.

I pulled the bag with the quilt top out and just stared at it.  I had no idea what I was going to do.  I left it on the table and throughout the evening I kept walking over to look at it.  Finally, on Monday morning I found my inspiration.  I began cutting fabric and building my row.  At 10:30 that night I had to stop.  I only had two seems to sew, but I was afraid that I would make a mistake if I tried to finish it then.

So, Tuesday morning I was up at 7:00.  Jumped into the shower, got dressed.  Made coffee.  Finished the round.  It looked pretty good.  I was pleased.  Then was out of the house by 9:30 for my guild meeting.  I pulled into the parking lot at 9:50 and it was completely empty.  I then realized that it was the first Tuesday of June and my meeting is the second Tuesday of the month.

I was actually supposed to be at my sit and stitch group.  It was too far for me to go as I had a pre-op appointment in an hour away.  I decided to stop for an iced coffee at McDonald’s.  When I went to pay, I saw that I had left my credit cards home.  So, I had to stop home and grab my card wallet.

I made it to the appointment in time.  I was actually a little bit early.  I didn’t realize how early until the receptionist told me my appointment was on Wednesday.  I couldn’t believe it.  She was so kind, she told me she would work me in since I lived so far away.  What an angel.  I had seen one doctor that if you were not at your appointment fifteen minutes early, he refused to see you.  So I know how temperamental physicians can be.  Not only did they fit me in, I didn’t wait ten minutes to be seen.

It was at this point I was beginning to wonder if I was losing it.  I wound up disorganized the entire week.  I couldn’t keep my days straight and still haven’t made it to the grocery store.  I am thankful that I had food in the freezer.

Letting Gracie out before bedtime has become very entertaining.  When I open my front door, tree frogs and toad scatter over the patio and up on the wall.  Gracie just sniffs at them and walks away.  If I am quiet and stand still, I can see the little frogs catch the bugs flying about.  It makes me smile to see those little frogs.

I am so glad you stopped by for coffee.  I hope you have a good weekend.  I have plans to watch the NASCAR race in Michigan tomorrow.

Friendly Fill-Ins is hosted by 15andmeowing and Four-Legged Furballs.  Follow the links if you would like to join in.  Here are this week’s Fill-Ins and my answers.

1. My favorite subject in school was biologyActually, I liked all the sciences except for Physics.  But biology was my all time favorite.

2. An extracurricular activity I participated in was being a member of the Future Nurses ClubThe club cemented my desire to become a nurse.

3. I want to learn many things.   I know that isn’t a good answer.  I have always wanted to learn to take really good photographs.  I can see that the exercises I have done are improving my shots.  That is thanks to many talented people sharing their expertise online.

4. It takes courage to admit you are wrong.  When you admit you are wrong, you are letting yourself be open to all sorts of reactions.  But, I find that admitting I am wrong about something either important or not, opens the door for great communication and learning on everyone’s part.

FOWC with Fandango — Placate, Tropical, Simple, Picayune

t was getting late. The children in Miss Sally’s class had reached the limit of waiting. Miss Sally called down to the principal’s office to find out what the hold up was. The surprise had arrived late but was on the way to her classroom now, she turned to the children and gave a thumbs up.

Soon there was a knock on the door. One of the students got up to answer it. He opened the door there stood a beautiful Golden Retriever. He had a jacket on that said his name was Max. The child squealed with delight. He looked into the hallway to find out who had brought Max to school. There was no one there.  He invited Max in.

Max was a very sweet dog. He loved the children. He let them pet him and he would placate them with simple tricks for treats which he had in a pocket in his jacket. Miss Sally was smiling because the surprise was having the desired effect on her class. This was her introduction to learning responsibility about animals.

The children realized that there was a stranger standing in the front of the class with Miss Sally. Mr. Henry had joined Max and was enjoying the sight. The children had a ton of questions for him. How old is Max? What does he eat? Where does he sleep? The usual picayune questions third graders ask. Mr. Henry answered all of their questions.

Mr. Henry began to talk about adopting pets because there were so many animals that needed homes. The children sat very still and listened to how Mr. Henry had come to have Max.

I was on a trip in the Caribbean to an island called St. Lucia. As I walked along the beach, I saw a wet dirty dog running toward me. A site I had never expected to see on this tropical beach. When he reached me he began jumping around as if he wanted me to play with him. I couldn’t help but play with him.

As I headed back to my hotel, I realized he was following me. I asked the attendant if he knew who’s dog it was. He told me that he was a stray that hung around the hotel. Sometimes he got fed from the kitchen. but often begged the beachgoers for food.  That made me very sad because he was alone with no one to love him.

Mr. Henry explained the Caribbean had had terrible hurricanes that destroyed many homes. People could not take care of their pets anymore and they had to let them go.  It was taking a long time to rebuild. If you were not at a tourist area the island was pretty bare.  I decided to adopt Max.  It would help the dog,  but would also take one stray from the streets of St. Lucia.  A win-win!  It took a lot of paperwork, but I was able to bring Max home. He has been my companion ever since.

The children were happy to learn about pet adoption and thanked Mr. Henry for bringing Max to school. The kids asked if he could visit them again.

Cee’s Share Your World

Here are this week’s questions with my answers.

A piece of clothing from your younger childhood you still remember?  The only piece of clothing I remember from my early childhood was a bathing suit.  I loved it.  It was white with gingerbread men on it and trimmed in pink.  My mother had a matching one.  I can see myself sitting on the step to the kiddie pool wearing that bathing suit.  I wish I had a picture of it.

Regardless of your physical fitness, coordination or agility: If you could be an athlete what would do? Remember this is SYW, dreaming is always allowed.  If I were able, I would like to be a race car driver.  I love to drive fast and think it would be exciting.

In a car would you rather drive or be a passenger?  I would rather be the driver.  If I am a passenger I fall asleep.  🙂

What did you appreciate or what made you smile this past week? Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.  I had the opportunity to watch my grandchildren in their dance recital.  I was amazed at how much improved Andrew is.  It was a great day.

SYW is hosted by Cee over at Cee’s Photography.  It’s a great way to get to know your fellow bloggers.  If you would like to join us, just click the link.

FOWC With Fandango — Primitive

Costume Historian

The Primitive Woman

Sitting by the fire stitching
Late at night a labor of love
She provides her families wardrobe
With tedious work that strains her eyes.

Up in the morning before sunrise
Her day begins with cooking a meal
Feeding and dressing the children
Then out the door by her husband’s side.

Working the fields
They laugh with each other.
Their lives intertwined
Never to part.

Her faith in God is taught by example
With prayer, kindness, and love.
She teaches her children reading and writing
There are no schools for them to attend.

Hard work and long days
For the family she loves.
Finding joy in the struggles
Of the life, she leads.

A primitive woman
Lives a primitive life
I’m thankful I’m a modern woman
Living a modern life.

FOWC With Fandango — Skedaddle

Bobby and Joey walked along the dirt road throwing sticks for Champ to chase and retrieve. Champ was Bobby’s Golden Retriever and constant companion.

It was a hot day and the boys were arguing about who could throw a stone the farthest. Deciding to find out, they each found the right sized stone. Bobby threw his first. It landed in the middle of the road. He ran up to it and marked the distance with a stick before Champ could get it.

It was Joey’s turn to throw his stone. He wound up, took aim and threw his stone. It landed on the side of the road. He ran up to it reached to grab a stick and stopped in his tracks. Right next to the stick he was going to pick up was a copper head. The snake was lying there sunning itself. Knowing that the snake was poisonous he skedaddled.

Bobby and Champ caught up to him wondering why he had run away. Joey explained, of course, Bobby and Champ had to go investigate. Joey yelled after them not to get too close. As they approached the snake it began to slither back into the shelter of the woods. It wanted nothing to do with Champ and Bobby.

The boys, excited about seeing the snake, headed home. They couldn’t wait to share their news. Joey’s mom celebrated their safety by making peanut butter sandwiches and lemonade.

Happy June

coffeeshare

Come in and have a cup of coffee with me.  Or I’ll make a pot of tea if you prefer.  How have you been?  Isn’t the weather beautiful today?  Sun shining, birds chirping.  I love it!

Can you believe it’s June already?  How quickly time passes.  May was a blur for me.  What do you think of the Daily Post retiring?  I loved the daily prompts.  I’ll miss it for sure, but like they said they will be left on the site and can be used over again.  Also, I see some people have already organized prompts to take their place.

What a week it’s been!  I had Alannah over the holiday weekend.  She is learning how to sew.  She looked so cute behind my Featherweight sewing machine concentrating on keeping her seams straight.  We had a really good time.  It’s fun to have the kids spend the weekend.  Although I have to admit it can be exhausting.  They seem to be active until they close their eyes to sleep.

It rained here so much this week which led to a Fibro flare.  So I didn’t get too much accomplished in the house.  Finally, on Thursday I got my dining room table cleared off.  It still had the sewing machine and supplies on it from the weekend.

Yesterday I spent three hours going through the mail I hadn’t opened.  Three hours!  I cannot believe the amount of junk mail that is sent out daily.  I would just throw it out immediately, but I am afraid that there will be one piece of mail that is important in the pile.  So the three hours doing it was my penance for not sorting it right away.  I watched NASCAR practice and qualifying for the Pocono Race on Sunday while I did it.

My miniature roses are blooming again.  They went into a little bit of shock when I transplanted them into bigger pots.  I love flowers, but not gardening.  I used to have beautiful gardens back home in Pennsylvania.  It was a lot of work, but I really enjoyed the results.  I had so many varieties of Hosta.  They were the focal point of my gardens and I accented them with colorful annuals.  Along the fence surrounding the pool, I had hanging baskets with brightly colored flowers.  Purple clematis decorated the front porch railings and columns and hanging baskets of ferns hung between the columns.  So since retirement, no gardens.

Today is dance recital day.  Looking forward to seeing the kids dance.  I’ll run some errands while I’m in town.  I guess I’ll have to go food shopping too.  Not my favorite job.  But I do like to eat and my cupboards are bare.  Gary loved to food shop.  He would be gone for hours.  Me, I am in and out.  I have a list and I stick to it.  Gary would always want me to go with him.  Occasionally I gave in.  I used to say he thought food shopping was taking me on a date.

I guess I should hem those shorts for Kelly.  I’ll see her today at the recital.  She could really use them now that it’s gotten hot.  I need to burn a DVD for her of Alannah’s dance competition too.  Guess I should get moving.

Have a wonderful week.
