How We See Ourselves, How Others See Us, And How To Embrace Where We Are — Catholic Wife, Catholic Life

I thought I would share this especially since the 2017 Kindness Challenge is going on right now.  I think it’s definitely worth the read.

I thought it was about time that I share some more of the best finds with you! These are some of the things that really resonated with me this week, and a lot of them have to do with who we are — with our identity, with how we see ourselves

Miss Marks

Daily Prompt:  Natty

Have you ever wound up somewhere completely under dressed?  I’m talking about everyone else looking natty and you are in a pair of jeans and a “good” T shirt.  I remember one time I was supposed to pick someone up from a gathering.  I arrived on time and appeared at the front door of a beautiful huge house.  The door was opened by a maid in uniform and I was told to go on in where the gathering was taking place.

I walked into a room, or I should say ball room, it was so big.  It was elegantly decorated. All of a sudden I felt very out of place.  I had no idea where I was heading when I volunteered to pick up Miss Marks.  That should teach me to always look presentable.

Thinking back on it now, I should have had some idea.  Miss Marks is a very wealthy lady who has always traveled in those wealthy high society circles.  Of course aging doesn’t just effect those of us who are not wealthy, it also gets the wealthy too.  I am not sure why Miss Marks didn’t utilize her own car and chauffeur.  I asked her that on our way to her home.  She told me that she preferred not to have her whereabouts tracked by her distant family.

Wow. I thought that maybe she was being a little hard on her family and I suggested that maybe they were just concerned about her.  She chuckled right out loud at that idea.  No she said, they are just waiting until I die so they can have the money.

I felt very sorry for Miss Marks.  It must be awful to not have a good relationship with your family.  She had never married or had children.  She must be lonely I thought.  We who don’t have that kind of money tend to think that those who do don’t have any problems, but clearly, they do.  I have begun to think that money is indeed the root of all evil.

Monday Monday

Tell Me Something Good:  June 6, 2017

Monday Monday by The Momas and the Popas

Monday, Monday, so good to me
Monday mornin´, it was all I hoped it would be
Oh Monday mornin´, Monday mornin´ couldn´t guarantee
That Monday evenin´ you would still be here with me

Monday, Monday, can´t trust that day
Monday, Monday, sometimes it just turns out that way
Oh Monday mornin´ you gave me no warnin´ of what was to be
Oh Monday, Monday, how could you leave and not take me

Every other day, every other day
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Monday comes, but whenever Monday comes
A-you can find me cryin´ all of the time

Monday, Monday, so good to me
Monday mornin´, it was all I hoped it would be
But Monday mornin´, Monday mornin´ couldn´t guarantee
That Monday evenin´ you would still be here with me

Every other day, every other day
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Monday comes, but whenever Monday comes
A-you can find me cryin´ all of the time

Monday, Monday, can´t trust that day
Monday, Monday, it just turns out that way
Oh Monday, Monday, won´t go away
Monday, Monday, it´s here to stay
Oh Monday, Monday
Oh Monday, Monday

So today is Monday.  To most of the world it’s the beginning of the work week or school week.  I never bought into the Monday Blues especially since I loved school and I worked as an RN for over 30 years.  My work week started on any day of the week.  The same for my weekends.  They were not always on Saturday and Sunday.

So, since I have spent most of my life living a very strange week, here’s some advice.

Monday is just a day.  It is 24 hours long just like every other day in the week.  There is no reason to believe it is anything more or less.  It has always been my experience that you can choose not to fall into the pitfalls of such societal ideas.  Nothing  is written in stone to change your good humor and mood because the day is Monday. So, throw out those cranky pants ideas about Mondays and have a wonderful day.

“You think Mondays are bad? Try working weekends, holidays and 12 hour nights!”  Many nurses I have worked with over the years.  🙂

Baking Cookies

Daily Prompt:  Uniform

christmascookies

Do you bake Christmas cookies?  I hate to admit this, but I am the worlds worst cookie maker.  See how pretty these cookies look?  Mine are never this nice.  I can’t even manage to get my chocolate chip cookies to be uniform in shape and size.  How pathetic is that?

Through the years I worked at night.  So when it came time for holiday baking, my husband would bake the cookies with my kids.  They hated when I was home to join in because I made such a mess of the cookies.  I can bake pies, cakes, but I just don’t have the magic touch for cookies.

When Gary and I married, his mother gave me all of the cookie recipes she had made over the years.  Many of them were from Gary’s grandmother.  I tried to make them the first year we were married.  My husband, what a trooper, never complained once about the terrible cookies I made for him.  The next year when I had moved to nights at the hospital, he was just a little too anxious to take over the Christmas cookie baking.

When my oldest grew up she began baking the cookies with her dad.  Once or twice I attempted to help and was told that I could line the cookie sheets with parchment paper and the tins that we kept them in for storage.

Absolutely everyone I know can make beautiful, delicious cookies.  I’m not sure where I was when that talent was handed out, but I sure missed the boat.  So after all these years I have decided to forgo the task of cookie baking and just be a taster.

Week 4: Kindness Role Model

Week 4:  Kindness Role Model

If I had to choose who to list as my role models, I would have to start with my children. My oldest Kelly, has her hands full with my grandchildren. One has Asperger’s, one has other issues and my granddaughter dances four nights a week.  She is busy.  She has her own health problems.  But…she never hesitates to extend a hand to someone in need. She never hesitates to be thoughtful.

My son Gary, is very caring.  He is a wonderful father always putting his family first.  He is forgiving and generous in thought and deed.  Always ready to lend a hand to one in need.

My daughter Samantha, always generous with her time.  She will lend a hand at the drop of a hat to anyone in need.  Sam is thoughtful and kind always.

Then I have friends, real friends who have always been there for me.  Never question if my need is real or imagined.  Pat I have know for fifty years.  Even though we don’t live close to each other anymore, she never ceases to show her kindness and understanding. Pat is someone who has always put others before herself.

And there is Dottie who I have known for forty nine years has always been kind to everyone she meets.  A wonderful friend to me.  We were in each others weddings.   Nothing is too much to ask of her.

Then there is Wanda.  I met her on the internet after she read my profile when I was on aol.  She is also a nurse, we share the same name, and we are both in North Carolina.  We hit it off online and became friends.  We met at Thanksgiving after about a year of chatting.  When she married her husband I was her matron of honor.  Wanda has had many medical problems.  She never gets short tempered.  She remains understanding and always is kind.  She puts herself out for anyone who needs something.  We have been close friends for well over twenty years.

Sue is someone I have only known since 2005.  I met her at my quilting guild.  We hit it off and became friends.  Sue is thoughtful, kind, and never hesitates to do whatever she can for anyone who needs anything.  The thing about Sue is she is a wonderful listener.

I don’t have to look far for role models.  My family and my close friends fit the bill.  I could not be more proud of my children and the way they step up when someone is in need.  My dear, dear friends have always been examples of kindness to me.  I am truly blessed to have these wonderful people in my life.  They know what I need without my asking.

Last year, when my husband passed away I was shown kindness from so many people. It was a very difficult time for me as you can imagine.  Acquaintances I hardly knew showed me such warmth and understanding and compassion.

If we look around we see that there is more kindness in the world than we realize.

Whether or not you are young or old

Stories are formed and often told.

We mingle out thoughts together and then

We start over and over again.

It matters not how weathered the words we use.

Who knows where tales go or what will be seen.

Just like wood all weathered and worn.

A good tale says a lot about where you have been.
