The Hits Just Keep On Coming

A few days after Gary passed away, my son in law Joe’s grandmother passed away.  He had to head to Pennsylvania.  His father had no one else to lean on.  He felt so bad about missing Gary’s Life Celebration on the 6th, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Two days before Gary passed away, a good friend of ours passed away.

We had his celebration at the Railroad Museum in Wilmington.  He loved trains and collected model trains.  It was the perfect place.  I was floored to see his brothers and wives and his mom and sister walk into the museum.  We are having a memorial in PA in October, so I thought they would not come down.  It was a wonderful surprise.  Samantha just took over and planned the whole thing.

I got a message from my cousin in California that her husband passed away on the 10th.

Monday I turned 65.  It was the first birthday in 43 years that I celebrated my birthday without Gary.
For my birthday I adopted the sweetest little dog.  I named her Gracie.  She is the first female dog I have had.  She was spayed yesterday and I picked her up late in the afternoon.  Gracie is a Cairn Terrier Mix and weighs 8.5 pounds.  Gracie is setteling in nicely.

My good friend Sue was here and took me out to dinner.  We had some Calabash Seafood.  We ate way too much, but there are no calories on your birthday.  🙂

We got home about 7:30 on Monday night and I noticed that my air conditioner unit was running and running with no air coming out of the vents.  You guessed it.  The unit is shot.  The guy was here today and he just shook his head and said I hate to give you bad news but……So a new unit is about 7 grand.  You can believe I have had a few conversations with Gary over this.

I haven’t done much reading the past couple of weeks.  I hope to get back into that soon.  I am also looking forward to getting back to quilting.  My grand kids want new quilts.

Have a good one.

Lazy Days

I am sure you have all seen these keep calm graphics around the net.  I couldn’t resist posting this one.  That’s what I have been doing all day.  Reading a book.  It’s been lazy days around here so far this week.

First of all, the race was cancelled on Sunday and they ran yesterday.  Another disappointing race. Kasey didn’t finish well. He did however run better than his finish showed.  After the race was done, I didn’t feel like doing anything but vegging out on the sofa.  So I never even came in here to post to my blog.

Second of all, the weather has still been rainy with thunder storms.   I am beginning to think we should either build an ark or grow some feathers.

After having a delicious salad for dinner it was back to my book.  Of course later we watched our Monday night TV shows.  Rizzoli & Isles and then Major Crimes.  I love these shows.  It’s the last season for Rizzoli and Isles.  I hate that the series is done after this year.  It’s interesting to see how they are filling out the characters in the show.

There have been a lot of our shows that have ended this year.  Downton Abby, Royal Pains, Mike & Molly, CSI Cyber, Person Of Interest, and The Good Wife have all ended.  That’s a lot of viewing time that has opened up.  I sure hope the networks have something good to put in their slots.  Some of the new shows leave a lot to be desired.  Since when is stupidity funny?  I look at my grown children and shake my head.  They are roaring and I’m just shaking my head.

Actually, I can take TV or leave it.   Since I like to go to bed around 10 PM I am happy that my 10 o’clock shows are gone.  There are plenty of things to keep me busy instead of watching TV.  Right? Quilts to make, books to read, baby hats to crochet…

Till next time.

Guess What Day It Is…

No it’s not Wednesday.  🙂  Today is Sunday, and that means Race Day.  The race is in Pocono, Pennsylvania this afternoon.  It’s one of my favorite tracks.  I wish we had gone to a race there when we lived in PA.  My hubby isn’t one for going to sporting events.  He would rather see them on TV because there are multiple angles and replays.  He just doesn’t get the excitement one feels attending in person.  I am hoping to get to Homestead this winter.  My son lives in Miami.  I might be able to talk hubby into that one with the added benefit of visiting our son.

So today Kasey Kahne is starting from the 23rd  position.  He had a bad qualifying.  He has won at Pocono in the past..  There aren’t that many races left for him to make the chase for the championship.  I would hate to see him not make it again this year.

Kasey is running the Great Clips car today.  They are one of his prime sponsors.  The car paint scheme changes depending on who his main sponsor is for each race.  Here’s the Great Clips car.

Enjoy your day!

To Shop Or Not To Shop

Fabric shopping.  Who can’t relate?  There is noting like walking along the buffet of beautiful, glorious fabric.  Ah  I almost have to touch each and every morsel.  I delight in the possibilities of what masterpiece I could create with just this perfect piece of material.
Before I realize it, drool is dripping from my chin. Nonchalantly I pull my handkerchief from my pocket and while pretending to cough, I wipe the tell tale sign away from my face.  Phew!  I am ever so thankful that Mom always told me to carry a hanky. Slowly I search the shop for a diversion. Good, there are notions.  I head over there to give my eyes a chance to lose their glassed over look.
But then it hits me again.  All of those can’t live without rulers and buttons and…Well you know what I mean.   Before I know it…you guessed it.  I’m drooling again!  Will this impediment to my cool calm exterior never stop?  So then I give myself a strong talking to and begin to graze the delightful desert, the patterns.
I am sure you know what is coming next.  Of course I begin drooling again.  I can’t control it.  My hanky is soaked.  I look around the shop with panic in my eyes.  Not a beach towel in sight.  What to do?  What to do?  With that one of the girls from the shop walks up and asks “Are you OK?” I smile and tell her yes.  She asks if I am ready to have my fabric cut.   I follow her to the cutting table.  As I stand there waiting for my treasures, I look around the shop and see someone else with glassed over eyes and drool dribbling down her chin.  🙂

I love this cartoon.  Sound familiar?  I must admit that when my hubby has gone fabric shopping with me he usually asks if I am sure I have enough.  I am one lucky quilter! But then I remember what is waiting for me at home and say yes I’m sure.

Heading Back To North Carolina In A Few Days

Looks like we’ll be heading back home in a day or two. I am looking forward to sleeping in my own bed!  I can’t believe we have been in Florida for over two months. I have really enjoyed spending time with Dottie and Frank. We have laughed and laughed so much this visit. But I want to get home and do some sewing for Isabella. And…I need to get quilts made for Andrew, Aidan and Alannah for Christmas this year. Frank’s 80th birthday is in October and I want to make a quilt for him too. He’s an Eagles fan and I have the fabric home waiting for his quilt. I haven’t really done much quilting lately, but am finding I am more than ready to jump back into it.

Deadly Arrangements (The Flower Shop Mystery Series, #2)Deadly Arrangements by Annie Adams

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A fun easy read with some really funny episodes mixed in. I enjoyed Ms. Adams’ writing style. And I enjoyed how she brought “Q” out of her shell into trusting again.

Another Cancer Saint

When I went to confession the other day Father Huttle gave me a pamphlet about St. Michael of the Saints who was a Trinitarian priest in the 1600’s.  He has had numerous miracles attributed to his intercession.  Many of which were cancer patients. I had never heard of him.  I always used  Saint Peregrine as my go to guy for cancer intercessions.  I have recently been told my cousins husband Joe was diagnosed with cancer.  Also my friend Dottie’s husband has cancer.

I am beginning a Novena to him and Saint Peregrine today and ask anyone who feels moved to do so to join me.

Saint Michael of the Saints
Trinitarian Mystic and Cancer Patron
Novena Prayer

We praise you, Most Holy Trinity, for having sent us St. Michael of the Saints to be our friend and intercessor in the fight against cancer.
Grant us, we pray, a humble faith that we may follow in his holy footsteps and believe without a doubt in your generous gift of healing.
With humble and childlike trust, we ask your Divine help through St. Michael of the Saints in this urgent necessity.
May this gift of bodily health bring us peace and joy which are but a foretaste of heaven, and may we be counted one day among your saints in glory.
Father, your world is ill with cancer and frightened.  We pray you ease the suffering of those afflicted, give loving hands to those who care for them, and light the way for those who seek its cure.
Merciful Father, extend your healing hand so that we may cry out: A cure, at last!
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Prayer For Cancer Patients

Most Holy Trinity, You who gave us Saint Michael of the Saints as trusted friend and intercessor, and as patron of those afflicted with cancer, look with kindness on Thy servants who this day invoke his name.
Through his intercession, comfort those in distress, confirm those in doubt. Satisfy their spiritual needs from the treasury of Your grace.
Remember all those who call on Your help, but be especially solicitous of [Mention Name]. Restore health to this person and to all who are sick.
Sanctify those who endure pain with Christ-like acceptance and grant to all of us a just reward in the life of glory to come.
In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Holy Door of Mercy Mary Queen of the Universe National Shrine, Orlando, Florida.
(To see a close up of the doors click here.)
Yesterday I was blessed to visit this beautiful shrine of  Our Lady.  As I have mentioned in previous posts I  been visiting my dear friend in Orlando and I had asked her how close the shrine was to her.   Dottie had never been to the shrine herself and was happy to take me there. I was anxious to first visit the shrine and then to walk through the Door of Mercy located there.
The doors to the basilica are beautifully carved.  They depict scenes from the life of Christ, Mary and tell stories from the Old Testament.  Catholic churches around the world have been designated to have special doors denoted as Doors of Mercy during this Extraordinary Year of Mercy in the church and are pilgrimage sites for the faithful.
Confession is offered daily and Mass is said twice daily.  I met the most wonderful priest, Fr. Richard Tuttle.  He is a retired professor from Franciscan University of Steubenville.  After hearing my confession we sat and talked for quite a while.  Whenever I visit a shrine I usually obtain a rosary from the gift shop.  I finally got my Irish rosary and stopped back to have Fr. Tuttle bless it for me.
I came away with the most wonderful peaceful feeling I have ever felt.

After we spent such a lovely day at the shrine.  We were off to Animal Kingdom for a cast preview of new features that will only be seen at night.  Beginning Memorial Day weekend, the park will be open until 11 PM.  There were shows, parades, a night safari and a new light feature displayed over the tree of life in the center of the park.  We had ice cream and two more rides on the Everest roller coaster.  We had one good time.  🙂
