Following Her Example

“Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.” ― Therese of Lisieux

This is one of my favorite quotes from St. Therese. How much simpler can it be to evangelize than this? The best and easiest way to show our love for Jesus Christ is to be Christ like by loving our neighbor. That includes engaging with the stranger in the parking lot and our friend in the store. Sure there is more to it than that, but it’s a terrific start. Don’t you think?

Lets face it, we are not all outspoken. Some of us are very shy. That is just the way we are. But even the shyest of us all can manage a smile or a simple hello. Isn’t that what Jesus would do? Volunteering at your local hospital, senior center or elementary school, donating quilts to nursing homes or crises centers, working at your local food bank are just a few ways to live our faith.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York said, “Every person is created with unique gifts, talents and temperaments – all of which can be used to reach others who have yet to hear or understand the good news of God’s plan of salvation in Jesus Christ. Whether you are an extrovert and like to engage others in faith conversation or are more reserved and prefer to let your life do the talking, as Catholics, we’re all called to this work, not just priests and religious.”

Vision Statement

Yesterday was very busy.  I had a doctor appointment, then Gary and I had run around doing errands.  The time got away from us so we stopped to grab something to eat.  I was sitting across the table from Gary when I noticed this sign above his head.

If you can’t read it, it says, “We will serve each other and out guests with enthusiasm.”  Serve – Enthusiastically meet the needs of others before your own needs are met.

I was very impressed by this and indeed our server was very pleasant and enthusiastic.  I realized that this vision statement comes from the words of Jesus. Love thy neighbor as thy self.   It doesn’t matter in what situation you find yourself we are called to love and serve each other joyfully.  Even if that service is picking up the mail for your neighbor, working as a waitress in a restaurant, or working in a community outreach program.  It’s realizing that our neighbor doesn’t mean the neighbor that looks and acts like us, but also the ones who look different, or travel in different social circles.  Just think how nice our world would be if we would all adopt this Vision Statement.
