I must confess that i was in bed at midnight last night. Yes, I’m getting to that point in my life when partying until the wee hours of the morning don’t interest me anymore. Now my idea of a good time is going to bed early enough to say my prayers and read a bit of a good book before I fall asleep. Of course that doesn’t guarantee I won’t sleep till 10 AM some days because I wind up reading till the wee hours. 🙂
I just finished our traditional New Year’s Day good luck dinner. Pork roast & sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and applesauce. YUM When our kids were home as they were growing up they hated that for dinner. They were made to eat at least one piece of pork and one strand of the sauerkraut. If we hadn’t had a particularly good year, they would say “it didn’t work last year” and I would counter with “just imagine how bad it would have been if we had’t had this last year”. You can imagine the looks I got. It’s funny how different areas of the country have different new years dinners. I’m from PA, I grew up with the sauerkraut & pork. My husband was also from PA and luckily he grew up with the same thing. His was just prepared differently. My family cooked it on top of the stove, his baked it in the oven. I have to say after I tasted his baked, I never cooked it on the stove again. Here in the part of NC where I live, black eyed peas are the lucky food. Now that’s a dish I can live without!.
I have more that the new year to celebrate today. My neighbors geese came back today to graze on our lawn and the corn I put out for them. They stop coming down when the weather gets really hot and they have started nesting. My neighbor has a pond on his property so they don’t go far from it in the summer. I was so excited to see them this morning. And my favorite Gus has made it through. He’s my favorite.
